‘Return to Life’ Pilates with Barry

What can i expect from this class?

These 60 minutes classes are designed to help you learn and understand YOUR body. We will enjoy some floor based exercises to decompress, some satisfying stretches to move with freedom, some mind bending balance challenges to keep you on your toes, and powerful planks to encourage endorphins. Then, at the end, a guided restorative meditation.

ABOUT PILATES

Pilates is a highly adaptable exercise system that caters to individuals of all fitness levels and physical abilities through its extensive use of modifications. Every movement can be tailored to meet a person's unique anatomical needs, injury history, or fitness goals. Your instructor can adjust exercises to reduce or increase challenge, use props like foam blocks and fitness circles to assist with alignment, and alter the range of motion to protect sensitive joints. This inherent flexibility makes Pilates exceptionally inclusive, allowing seniors, pregnant women, elite athletes, and individuals undergoing physical rehab to safely build core strength, improve flexibility, and enhance body awareness at their own pace.

Pilates classes are way more than a quiet zone of strict exercises—they are active, supportive learning playgrounds where curiosity is your best friend! Barry loves it when you ask questions, whether you are wondering which muscle is supposed to be burning or how to stop your toes from cramping. Think of this class as a fun, collaborative lab for your body, where cracking a smile and figuring out how your joints move is all part of the experience. There are no silly questions here, just plenty of high-fives and lightbulb moments as you learn to move your body in totally new ways!

IS this class suitable for me?

The class is open to all. As a prerequisite, you need to be able to get up and down from the floor. There will be some physical challenges; for example a ‘plank’ - but Barry will give you other options or modifications if you need them.  If you want to ask any questions, feel free to email Barry  barryvardypilates@gmail.com and he will be happy to advise you.

WHat will i need?

The mats are provided. It’s really useful if you bring your towel into class with you so it can be used as a cushion or blanket where necessary. Please bring a blanket and warm layers for rest at the end!

About Barry

Hello, I’m Barry, and my mission is simple: I want you to walk out of our tipi feeling amazing—or, at the very least, better than when you walked in.

My journey started differently than most. I was a total exercise-phobe. My early memories of PE were filled with dread, and by my late twenties, I was sedentary, struggling with my mental health, and habits I knew weren't serving me. Then a friend asked me to join a Pilates class.

After that first hour, I walked home feeling lighter, taller, and freer. It was the only hour of the week I’d done something truly positive for myself. It broke the dam of self-care. Though I was "terrible" at first, Pilates taught me to nurture myself as much as it taught me to plank. It helped me find balance—not just on one leg, but in my life.

Since qualifying in 2007 with Modern Pilates, I’ve trained with Polestar and certified with Balanced Body, even guest-teaching for a professional football club in Sweden. If the guy who couldn't touch his toes can run workshops for ballet dancers, imagine what Pilates can do for you.

‘Return to Life’ Pilates runs at 8am and 11am every Wednesday in our Tipi.
