Sound Baths

What is a Sound Bath?

Rather like a visit to Pool Bridge Farm, a sound bath is a wonderful opportunity to create a sanctuary for yourself where you can step away from the outside world and take time to pause and reset, before emerging back out feeling nourished and refreshed. The main difference though is that - rather than bathing in the waters of Monet or ‘Q’ - in a sound bath we ‘bathe’ in the sounds of the instruments, which are carefully selected for their subtle but powerful ability to help rebalance, cleanse and heal the body on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.

Our physical bodies are made up of around 70% water, so we absorb the sound vibrations at a cellular level, which has numerous benefits to our holistic health and wellbeing. As well as balancing and harmonising the various organs, joints and systems in our physical bodies, the sounds also affect us on a more subtle level, helping us rebalance and recalibrate our mental, emotional and energetic bodies too; a bit like servicing a car so that it runs more smoothly, or tuning a musical instrument so that it plays more harmoniously.

The sounds used in a sound bath help to lower our brainwave frequencies towards a more meditative state, so you might also think of it as a 'sound meditation'; an opportunity to find your still-point or centre and reconnect with the less superficial aspects of yourself that you don't often have the opportunity to experience. Here you can allow the conscious mind to take a back seat for a while as the sounds to take you to that liminal space between waking and sleeping where you can rest in a space of pure 'being' rather than 'doing'. From here you can emerge feeling nurtured, nourished and well-rested, sometimes with new perspectives or insights, and almost always having lined yourself up for a great night's sleep!

Benefits:

Regular sound bathing can have a significant impact on our overall health and wellbeing, including; regulating the nervous system, reducing levels of stress and anxiety, reducing insomnia and sleep problems, helping with addiction, depression and low mood, assisting with physical and emotional aches and pains, balancing the immune system and reducing inflammation, and can also have a positive cognitive effect, improving memory and focus. You may begin to see positive changes in these areas after just one session.

What to expect:

Sound bathing is very accessible and you don't need to have any previous experience to join. There will be a full explanation at the start of the session so you know what to expect, with the opportunity to ask any questions before the sound journey begins. Usually you would receive a sound bath lying on the ground in a comfortable position (please see section on 'what to bring') but you are very welcome to sit if you would prefer.

After being guided into a place of comfort and stillness you will be offered the opportunity to set an intention/resolve (or sankalpa) for the sound bath, should you wish to - this is completely optional, however the power of the sounds can be amplified when you journey with a personal intention or purpose. A sankalpa is a concise, positively-worded statement, phrased in the present tense as if it has already happened, and can refer to any aspect of your life in which you wish to experience healing and wholeness. You can find examples online to help you form your sankalpa, should you wish to prepare one ahead of the session (for example, if you are suffering with physical pain in your leg, you may like to set a sankalpa such as 'I am healthy and healed and can walk with ease').

From here there is nothing left to do other than allow yourself to relax, absorb the sounds and enjoy the journey!

Contraindications:

Sound healing is generally a very safe practice, however due to the intensity of the vibrations - particularly from the gong and crystal bowls - caution should be taken by those who:

- are in the first trimester of pregnancy

- have sound-induced epilepsy

- have an acute mental health condition involving extreme levels of anxiety, depression or psychosis that is not currently controlled by medication

Caution is also recommended for those with a pacemaker.

NB: As the sessions are taking place outside, the risk is lower than in an enclosed space and may be minimised or mitigated by placing yourself further away from the instruments. However, it is not possible to say that doing so would make the experience risk-free for these conditions, so please consider this when booking and note that you attend at your own risk. Do let Anna or Romina know at the start of the session if any of the above apply to you or if there is anything else you feel it would be useful for her to know so that she can best support your needs. Anna or Romina are both very happy to answer any questions you may have or speak with you if you are unsure about whether or not the sound bath is suitable for you (contact details below)
